Forklift Data Plates and OSHA

I have received calls from 2 customers this month requesting help resolving citations they received from OSHA for using maintenance platform accessories without obtaining prior written approval from the forklift manufacturer.  29 CFR 1910.178(a)(4) was cited in at least one of the instances. In one platfrom manufacturer's opinion this doesn't apply to these platforms since they neither affect the capacity or safe operation of the forklift.

Simply none of the maintenance platforms  boast more than 1000 lbs uniform capacity and none are deeper than 48" (less than a 24" load center), certainly the forklift capacity is not affected. As for safe operation, all platforms for sale at forklift-accessories are designed in compliace with ANSI B56.1 which is recognized by OSHA as an industry standard.

However, better safe than sorry is a popular stance. Get written permission from the forklift manufaturer prior to putting anything on the truck. These were applications in manufacturing/warehousing for changing light bulbs and such. Not to be confused with regulations covering construction industry.
