Typical forklift forks are constructed of heat treated high carbon AISI 15D37H Boron steel. Forks are forged in a special machine that compresses the steel as they are formed in a manner to actually increase the the amount of material in the heel area by approx 20%. The small amount of Boron significantly increases the hardness of the forks.
